Tom Smith began his comedy career in 2000 more or less accidentally. Tricked onto a stage, he fell immediately in love with the craft and has not looked back. Born in San Francisco yet raised in the suburban jungles of San Jose, California. He was an awkward child who grew to awkward manhood and has been described as a highly literate suburban redneck nerd, and that was by a friend.
Regardless, his comedy is sharp, intelligent and satirical while remaining warm and accessible and chronicle’s the plight of a man at odds with the world around him. He was a semi-finalist in the 2007 ‘Battle of the Bay’ comedy competition at the San Jose Improv and was named by the East Bay Express as the number one reason to visit their ‘Best Comedy Club in the East Bay’ winner for 2008. He has appeared in clubs, bars and assorted peculiar venues from California to Dublin, Ireland.
Tom is also a writer whose contributions have been published both online and in print and is currently working on a feature length play. He is a producer, writer and director for the San Francisco based sketch comedy troupe 5by5; and as an actor has appeared in productions ranging from dramatic short work to full length musicals. He is a contributor and cast member of Animal Trash, a San Francisco sketch comedy troupe and an instructor at the San Francisco Comedy College.
