Funny by the Bay – Overview of Era’s
The San Francisco comedy scene, like all urban scenes across, has several distinct era’s historically. Like any history writer, I will be creating a series of time divisions for convenience sake. All such divisions are and can only be, largely arbitrary, because of course events are constantly in motion and separating one time period from another is logically absurd but tactically invaluable when telling a story played out over time. Funny by the Bay – Genesis
When I first started out doing stand-up comedy, the Bay Area, and San Francisco in particular were sold to me as one of the top AAA clubs in the nation. Success in comedy, depending on how you define success, gravitates to the big media markets and by far the title holders in this arena are New York and Los Angeles. Hands down. Exclusively.
Cities like San Francisco and Boston are feeder markets where a comic can develop his or her material/talent/voice with the goal of moving to LA or NY for the big ‘break’.
What marks San Francisco as unusual and worthy of attention, other than that it’s my hometown, is the unusual impact that San Francisco has had on comedy over the years. I hope to shed some light on the San Francisco Bay Area comedy scene, as it is today and as it has been historically with articles and interviews over the coming months.
